View Full Version : Multiple domains

I am considering making a move from my current host to here after seeing your hosting plans.
I currently have two sites in my hosting account under different domain names and the multiple domain accounts offered by you are just what I need. However I have a question. One of my sites has its domain name plus three aliases (different domain names) pointing to the same site. That makes FIVE domains hosted in my current account - four domains for one site and one domain for the other site.
Hosting plan #2 seems to suit my needs but it allows four domain names. Would my present arrangement be considered as a five-domain account or as a two-domain account?
Thanks.

I don't know if you are referring to the same e-mail but your reply yesterday said that there was no cost for having multiple domains but the question that I posted here was unanswered. Would my account be a two-domain or a five-domain one?

It would be 2, the aliases are counted as "Parked Domains" :)

GREAT!! I am almost sold now but I have to wait until mid-January because one of my sites is seasonal in nature and its annual spike of usage is coming in about one month. I don't want to risk breaking anything during the move that could cause trouble later. My current webhost is good enough but it is pricey compared to you.

Just to put things in perspective, I am paying right now $39.95 for a 200 MB hosting account with ONE MySQL database and six POP3 accounts. Plan #2 here is just $12.95 and allows four web sites with unlimited databases and mailboxes. True, it has less space and less data transfer allowance, but I am using sixty-something MB right now and 3.5 GB per month. I still would have plenty of space for future growth.

WOA man! That is expensive! One MySQL database? 6 Email addresses? Jese! You get unlimited quantities of those resources here.
But anyways, maybe by the time you order you will be one of the lucky ones to be placed on a virgin server, the new server known only as Manhattan.
To give you a little bit of info, Manhattan was named as a memorial to the tragedy that happened in the US on September 11, 2001.

Guess why I want to switch!
While I currently have no need for more than one database (used by a YaBB SE forum) it is nice to have the capacity of adding additional forums or other applications should the need arise in the future without having to spend a little extra.
Incidentally, that price did not seem expensive back in 1999.

Yes, I am sure that the prices were a lot more expensive back then. But now, you can get all of that for a fraction of the price.

Manhattan has a little secret too... :D
I remember back in 1998, when i paid $59.95 per month. It was the going rate for a decent service back then. Hosts that still charge that are robbers.

Another question. If I signup under a particular domain name, can I later make one parked domain the main account domain and park the other one?
Sounds like an odd question but what I would like to do is to signup using one of the domains I currently use as alias and when everything is ready (which could take a couple of weeks mostly due to a planned version update to my existing YaBB SE forum) then the "official" move would occur when the main domain for my site is transferred to the new location. I would then like to make that domain the main account domain and then park the other.

Yes you can. However, there will be about 10 minutes of downtime to your site while we make this change to the site configuration.
planned version update to my existing YaBB SE forum)
To run the current version of YaBB SE on our servers you must have the indexspeedup mod applied to your board. The new release of YaBB SE (1.5), which will be out soon, should have this mod as standard along with other sections of optimisation code. The main reason we require this is because YaBB SE on it's own can use a lot of CPU power and cause problems to other users on the server.

I don't really concur with the fact that the SE forum uses A LOT of CPU as I've used it in plenty of places without issue at all.
However, 1.5 will have all the recent speedups in place.
The main SE forum increased in speed by 18 times over the last few days after applying serveral speed fixes and database optimizations.
So I definitely suggest an upgrade to 1.5 when it is released and at the very least, installing the speed up MOD.

Quite strange how a Pre-Sales question turned into a large discussion between a lot of people... hehe.
