View Full Version : Why I had to give up on Rochen........

I am leaving Rochen after giving it a 2 week or so trial, during which time my new site has never actually worked! My feeling is that while Rochen may be a very good host for the experienced - make that very experienced - user (I have been designing and maintaining my own ebiz websites for several years, so I am not exactly a novice, but can't claim to be very expert).

For one thing, Rochen lacks the sort of manual that most other hosts have, telling the basics or setting up and operating an site with Rochen. They have a great control panel, but as terminology and usages differ from host to host, it can be very hard to figure out just what to do with it unless one has had a lot of experience on a lot of different hosts. Some of this info is on the forums, and other available from support, but it's like playing 20 questions to get an answer to even the most basic questions, a slow and agonizing way to try to extract basic info item by item that should be somewhere in any easy-to-find an access form.

Finally, tech support. OK, its better than some other hosts I've used, but not great. It always feels a little brittle to me - like they are doing the minimum to respond rather than go the little extra distance to solve the problem for once and for all, and are irritated at being asked an obvious question. It's the 20 Questions syndrome again. OK, I may be asking dumb questions, but isn't that part of their job? Also, if you ask two questions in one ticket, it always seems that only the first is really answered. The final straw is having a workticket unanswered after 3 days - it's like the support people have given up on me but can't even be bothered to tell me.

Actually, all these probs are not different to any hosting service, and I like the multiple domain thing enough that I would probably stay if it was not for one thing - I just can't get my website, a fairly simple one which has worked on several other hosts without probs - to work, and Rochen hasn't been able to either. With a 12 to 20 hour reponse time, what I am sure is just a minor problem is escalating into a major waste of time, and it's time to cut my losses. Support has tried to help, but too often with suggestions that show they haven't really tried to understand what the problem is - like telling me the reason my NMS FormMail script didn't work was because I hadn't put anything in the recipient line, when the instructions say to use that only as a last resort since it compromises security (security, BTW, being the whole reason Rochen says to use that script!).

It'll be interesting to see how Rochen handles this post - whether they just disappear it, or reply that I'm a whiner who was impossible to please, or actually try to fix some of the problems I've mentioned. I hope its the latter, there are a lot of good things here which make the deficencies all the more irritating.

Slindo, I am sorry your experience hasn't worked out with us and I wish you all the best in the future.

However, some of the support issues that were put to us were above and out of our control, such as asking us to install third-party scripts, debug code etc. We are a hosting company, not a software development company.

Our staff did examine your scripts though and try to give you the best advice we could, but again, it's not really part of our service to do that anyway. These type of questions should really be directed to the script's developers and not your hosting provider :)

Also, complaining about delays on support tickets regarding issues that we don't even support, in my opinion, is completely unjustified. If we wanted, we could have just closed your ticket and said we didn't provide support for that issue. But we didn't, we tried to work with you to get your scripts running.

As for not providing a manual etc. and I am sure other customers will back me up on this. We probably have one of the most complete Knowledge Base's out of the many hosting companies available. We have even recently gone to greater lengths and added things like interactive flash tutorials to help our customers even more.

I think this must be the first compliant I have seen in this section, which in my opinion isn't justified. However, we aren't the kind of company that goes about deleting posts just because we don't like them :D

Thank you for your review! :)

I tried everything I knew to get that script to work. And believe me, I have done hundreds of installations of this script, everyone of those installations worked with no issues.

As to why it didn't work for you...that I can't answer.

Anyways, good luck with your web journey.

Sorry to hear you're leaving.

I use the same script myself, and have not had any problems on any of Rochen's servers.
That script (NMS Formail) does require that you configure it correctly in order to work. It is written in such a way, as to be secure. However not having had a chance to actually examine your script, I can not provide any input.
If you had posted further regarding this issue in the customer only forums, i'm sure i would have been able to help.

I have never had a problem that has not been resolved.... however the resolution of most problems requires time and patience. I have found too that often support comes from other customers, many of them having an in-depth knowledge of scripts/coding etc etc.

You are correct, Rochen does not provide a manual, but i don't know anyone who does/could. Even people who graduate from university still find their knowledge is not complete. Rochen's knowledge base, however, combined with the customer to customer support option, has always worked for me and i'm sure will continue to ensure that you will find no better hosting company out there!

I wish you well, and will reinforce once again that as a resellar, with over 20 managed domains, Rochen is the best!

I wish you luck in finding a host that goes out of their way to help support their clients problems. If you find one that does beyond what Rochen does for the same price or less, well, congratulations.

I've seen a lot of hosts, left them all and am sticking with Rochen. One reason, and you see it here in this thread... Open and Honest, quick communication. They try to help out even when they aren't responsible for the problem, ie scripts, cpanel issues, etc. But at the end of the day, what matters to me is how they handled the issues. They are fair, quick, honest and open at every oportunity.

Obviously this person didn't see that, but there will always be those that don't see the forest from the trees...

Keep up the great work Rochen!

Well I do not use any kind of scripts on any of my sites; but I can tell you this; If are unhappy with Rochen's support and knowledge base / control panel documentation and the huge experience provided by Rochen own customers like bradlee, patrick stuart and all the wonderful people here; Then I am sure you will not be happy with no one else either; It seems to me if had a problem you were not letting people know; you were not seeking help! you might have posted tickets to the help desk about these script issues ((Not A Hosting Issue) but were not pro-actively seeking a resolution to your problems like asking other people on the forum for alternatives.

Good Luck with the search... altghough I am sure you will not find anything even close to what Rochen is all about.

Best of luck to you, slindo.

I do understand what you mean. It takes some getting used to asking other members for support which is not directly related to the webhosting service. I had a couple other webhosts and they all answered (or tried to answer my questions) and I never had contact with any other member. At first I thought it was strange addressing issues in the forums before putting a request into the helpdesk but it soon proved to be the best way to go. There are some extremely talented and knowledgeable people on these forums and if one doesn't know the answer to your problem chances are someone else will. I have gotten so used to it that I have no desire to go back to the "HelpDesk Only" option especially if it comes to issues that are not directly related to their service (after all, you don't want to get on customer support's nerves by asking them to help you with 10 different issues that should really be addressed to script authors or software makers who usually charge for their support). On these customer forums, you can post as many issues as you like and whoever is knowledgeable in that particular area will respond. It is great.

With regard to ease of use, I have not had a webhost with as many features and capabilities as Rochen. That doesn't mean that I was unable to use the basic features which are pretty similar to most other hosts but instead I am able to discover new things as I go along and believe me I am still learning. Basically, you can ride a tricycle if that is all you are looking for and it is not any more difficult than riding any other tricycle but if you feel like getting into something more challanging and using more advanced features which a lot of other hosts don't give you, Rochen is not stopping you.

If Rochen is not for you, I hope you find a host you feel more comfortable with. That's why there is the 15 day money back guarantee. :)

Best wishes!

Christian
