I have been with five reseller hosts in the past 5 years. The basics
Host 1: Inexpensive, friendly, server technology poor, performance horrid
Host 2: Inexpensive, friendly, performance not great, server broke down constantly and always had shared mailserver getting on spam blacklists
Host 3: Friendly, technology good, performance good, expensive ... and most tech support folks had to bump you up to a supervisor before anything got done
Host 4: Back to inexpensive, technology good, performance poor, and this time tech support treated me like I had the intellect of a chimpanzee, even when I carefully provided a detailed report of troubleshooting steps I'd taken prior to logging a support ticket.
Host 5: Rochen. Not the cheapest on the block... but performance, support, programming and everything else is absolutely unmatched elsewhere. I decided if we're going to be serious about the web development (my partner and I) we need to provide impeccable hosting to our clients or our reputation as developers will suffer. We think of it as a great investment now!
(Surprisingly, I did tons of research before picking hosts 1-4, just imagine what winners I'd have come up with if I wasn't as picky!)
